Art of Bonsai's 2006 Display Contest - Rules
Please read these rules carefully to prevent misunderstandings and possible disqualification later.

The objective of this contest is to promote the art of bonsai display.
This contest will officially start on May 25, 2006, no entries will be accepted sooner.
This is an educational experience as well as a competition.
A reference list appears at the bottom of these rules. You may find it useful in helping to prepare your trees for display.

Displays can be constructed using borrowed or purchased elements; the focus will be on the arrangement and display.
The displays can be Formal, Informal, or Casual, provided the presentation is polished, meaning: entries with cluttered backdrops and untidy presentation will be rejected!
You may enter as often as you would like, however each entry must be submitted separately and conform to the rules.
Entries must contain at least one companion element properly presented. (Scroll, kusamono, suiseki or figurine)
Bonsai may be displayed on a stand, or slab made of stone, concrete or wood or other natural/man-made materials. Pots should be clean and the general presentation of the display should be tidy with consideration given to the treatment of the soil surface.
Bonsai display is one of the many art components of bonsai. The pot, soil surface, stand and/or other components should all be in prime condition for display. Obtrusive wire and labels are not appropriate. The health and condition of the tree and any companion planting should be optimal.
The display area should be of appropriate size, clean, and
devoid of distraction. Lighting and proper focus should be given consideration, as should the treatment of the backdrop.
Entrants will need to email, with every entry, to AoB a photo release, indicating the origin of the elements, description, dimension & owner of the elements, acknowledging that the photos are unpublished and stating the following, "I am the photographer and hereby state that my photograph or photographs may be used by AoB and it's associates and I give permission for and acknowledge that the photograph or photographs may appear in publications, like Bonsai Today, for example, at AoB's sole discretion." (We will give full photo credits) As always, the photographer retains all copyright, AoB simply requests that we may use the photos here on the forum and in other publications as we decide.
The display may have a title of up to ten words and may be accompanied by an original short poem or explanation of up to 50 words. If the poem is not in English, an English translation should be provided.

You must submit one photo for judging on-line which could be up to 800x600 but must be at least 600 pixels on the long dimension. This photo must be emailed to
You must also submit a high-resolution photo of the display; this should be print quality around 2 million pixels minimum. This photo must be emailed to
Please pay special attention to the quality of your photograph, as out of focus, poor lighting, distracting shadows, etc will be cause for rejection.
We may request that the finalists re-photograph their displays for print purposes.
All entry photographs must be submitted by the contest deadline which is midnight, July 31, 2006 (all times Eastern Standard). You may submit sooner if you like. We will post all entries to the forum when the are received.

William Valavanis has graciously agreed to judge the display contest, his experience and qualifications are well known in the bonsai community.
William Valavanis will judge the entries using a judging sheet created by AoB for this purpose. This sheet will be made public before judging starts.
The top three winners will be those who score the highest on the judging sheet. These sheets with the judges comments will be made public at the end of the contest so that all may learn from them.
All plants must be real and alive. No Virtuals of any component will be allowed! Any touch ups on the photographs will be cause for disqualification.
Decision of the judge or judges are final.

Prizes will be announced as they become known. Rest assured that we have a few very nice things lined up, you won?t want to miss out on this contest!

Contest is open to all interested.
Contest is void where prohibited by law.
