Chris… C. Cochrane shared his knowledge of this book with the following words:
"Re’ copies of Kato’s drawings for the book on forest planting:
The photocopied drawings, as bound, were produced to share with directors of the National Bonsai Foundation in anticipation of the Foundation funding the English language publication of Mr. Kato’s book in 2001.
Distribution would have been extremely limited—probably to those in attendance at the annual NBF board meeting. Perhaps, 35 copies were produced & fewer immediately distributed. The photocopied drawings are far larger than illustrations in the English edition text, but not as distinct as smaller illustrations in the professionally-printed book. These bound illustrations were not intended for-sale but to share the flavor of Kato’s genius.
The placement of trees in pots & the outlines of pots, themselves, are illustrated as hand-rendered in the Drawings book. Japanese text and editorial notes are evident on many pages; on a very few pages, a photocopied note partially blocks an illustration beneath it. By comparison, Illustrations in the Forest, Rock Planting & Ezo Spruce Bonsai text maintain the expressiveness of tree forms but are more mechanically-rendered in illustrating placement of trees in pots & in outlines of pots."
Thanks Chris!
