William N. Valavanis, USA

Height: 33 in, 83 cm
Pot: Tokoname
Categories: Conifer

Judge Dan Barton scored 6
Judge Nick Lenz scored 9
Judge Michael Persiano scored 6
Total score 21
Total average score 7

Judge Comments:
DB - "Good trunk taper • good nebari • Foliage clouds slightly too wide on right side • good pot/tree relationship"
NL - "A beautifully crafted pine with exceptional basal roots. The pot seems off in both shape and ornamentation. A few branch tips are noticeably pulled up and could use a bit of wire."
MP - "The apex of the tree is flawed. Notice that the upper right branch in the apex is an eye poker. The base is nice, but the entire tree requires compression and a rethinking of the length of the number two branch."

Walter Pall, Germany
Ezo spruce (Picea jezoensis)
Height: 26 in, 65 cm
Pot: Natural stone from Germany
Categories: Conifer

Judge Dan Barton scored 9
Judge Nick Lenz scored 8
Judge Michael Persiano scored 9
Total score 26
Total average score 8.66

Judge Comments:
DB - "Beautiful tree, well proportioned • nice landscape arrangement but grasses out of proportion to rest of design • nice slab"
NL - "A very pleasing Gestalt, although it is difficult to make out any of the branching detail. The grasses look silly. Those climbing roots on the left could use some mimicking stones to justify the rise from the trunk."
MP - "This is an example of where Walt is able to balance natural with bonsai art. This is well done."

Nacho Marin, Venezuela
Junipero San Jose (Junipero San Jose)
Height: 10 in, 32 cm
Pot: Japanese
Categories: Conifer

Judge Dan Barton scored 7
Judge Nick Lenz scored 8
Judge Michael Persiano scored 4
Total score 19
Total average score 6.33

Judge Comments:
DB - "Well styled but still immature • Trunk a bit parallel and lacking taper • goodish nebari • over potted"
NL - "A dynamic little juniper with amazingly groomed foliages for the variety. The root base seems awkward in the foto but may not be in 3 dimensions, The pot is oversized and reminds me of an earth troll rising up to swallow the tree, rather than a defining ground line"
MP - "The tree requires refinement and rethinking of the descending primary branch."
