Judge Comments:
DB - "Delightful tree but crown needs further development • lovely choice of pot and colour • strong nebari • beautiful stand"
NL - "What makes this shohin reasonably cool is the anthropomorphic nature of the trunk. What does not make it cool is the speckled yellow pot."

Judge Comments:
DB - "Powerful little tree if a bit lost under all of the foliage (probably better winter image) • good choice of pot"
NL - "A perfectly creepy root system wriggles its way to the edge of a same color container and projects down the outside of the pot’s curvature – a very nice touch."

Judge Comments:
DB - "Excellently structured tree but dreadful choice of pot — too macho and slightly too big for tree • excellent secondary branches"
NL - "A powerful and well-framed tree. It is difficult to imagine it not being huge."
MP - "This tree accomplishes the bonsai illusion. Branch selection is meticulously executed and maintained. The taper allows the viewer to believe this is a towering monster."

Judge Comments:
DB - "Trunk lacks taper and branches a bit stiff • marginally over-potted (a glazed pot would be better)"
NL - "When I was young and foolish, I painted trees upon coffee mugs, trees that had captured a demented human soul. This little elm certainly qualifies, especially from the placement of the lumps, the two-legged base, and the bad hair day. Fun."

Judge Comments:
DB - "Sweet tree with a gross but very interesting root formation • a glazed pot possibly cream or pale blue (even yellow) would suit the tree better."
NL - "This is a curious shohin in that it seems to want to go both right and left at the same time, accomplishing neither like Obama. The trunk, though, is charming and the workmanship good."

Judge Comments:

NL - "A good try with nice form but little refinement."
MP - "This is your runner up. This shohin evokes a sense of tranquility and power at the same time."
