|Post subject:||AoB / KoB Article Contest - Thank You|
Throughout AoB's and KoB's history, we have always created and hosted the most original, professional, and successful bonsai related contests on the web. Not only have our record setting contests inspired bonsaists around the world, but also they have proved to be valuable educational resources in many ways. Our contest ideas and rules have become the template for contests all over the web, we are indeed flattered. Our contest entries have also become a reference source for many, offering a snapshot of the state of bonsai from many countries, and they have brought many bonsai and artists into the public eye that have never been seen on the web before.
The editorial staff of AoB and KoB had tossed around the idea of an article contest for a number of years, in fact the rules were actually written long before the decision to host the contest was actually made, but the idea was put on hold. We hesitated to host such a contest for various reasons, but mainly because the idea itself was not original and we wanted to assure we could incorporate our well-known high standards for quality and professionalism into an article contest, raise the bar, and thus meet and exceed our readers' expectations.
Forums hold article contests mainly to acquire content; this truth is obvious and is exactly why we were concerned. Holding the contest only at AoB or KoB would eliminate many good entries because AoB was founded in order to provide quality content dealing with the artistic aspects and design theory of bonsai and KoB was founded to provide quality content on the cultivation and styling aspects. The simple solution was to run the contest in such a manner that both forums were involved and that no entry would be disqualified based only on subject matter.
After much discussion, we took all the best aspects from our past contests and combined them into an article contest. Using the high standards and professionalism that AoB and KoB are known for and drawing upon some of the most respected bonsai editors and publishers as judges, we created a highly professional contest catering to those serious about the art of bonsai. To put the icing on the cake, the American Bonsai Society Journal agreed to sponsor the contest and offer possible publication in the journal to the entrants.
The contest objective was for participants to write an original article about bonsai in a professional and educational manner. The goal of this contest was educational and was meant to bring out the author in all who participated, as well as to encourage the creation of much needed articles for the bonsai community not only during the contest, but indeed after the contest as well. It is our hope that the participants of this contest will continue to write and publish articles afterward and in doing so, add to the knowledge base.
With 14 entries from a wide range of participants, beginner to very advanced, we are quite happy with the success of this first article contest. Our entrants entered an amazing collection of inspirational, educational, and overall fantastic articles on various subjects that will be valuable future reference.
The AoB / KoB Article Contest could not have been conceived and put into place, nor would it have been such a huge success, without the help of many people.
First, this contest would not have been possible with out the participation of the all the authors who entered. It takes a special type of person to place their work to be judged by professional judges and, maybe harder still, our peers. Contests such as this offer an educational opportunity for both participants and viewers alike. We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to all who took the time to write and submit their articles so that we may all enjoy and learn from their work.
Sponsors make it possible to host such contests and to publicize them worldwide. This year's contest sponsor was The American Bonsai Society and we wish to express our appreciation for all the staff there has done to make this contest a success.
The impressive list of prizes donated by the many other sponsors of this event are also worthy of praise, and we wish to thank each one of them for their contribution. Please visit the websites of these sponsors and give them your support in return for their effort in making the contest successful. A list of sponsors who donated prizes to this contest follows:
The Judges who volunteered to separately score each entry are four highly respected editors and/or publishers. We consider the Art of Bonsai Project and the Knowledge of Bonsai Forum indeed fortunate to have contest judges of this caliber, and would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to them for allotting time from their busy schedules to serve the bonsai community as judges of this contest. This year's judges are listed below:
Thanks to all of our members for your support and for helping to spread the word about this contest.
We also wish to thank the Internet bonsai community consisting of many forums in several languages for allowing and encouraging the promotion and discussion of the contest, the bonsai publications, and the international bonsai community for assisting in promoting awareness of this contest.
Behr Appleby deserves an honorable mention for writing such an outstanding thank you post last year; the post above is based on his work and contains many of his thoughts.
Tom Brown also deserves a thank you for testing out the many ideas of this contest first and basing his own Article Contest at Bonsai Vault on our past contest rules and ideas. It is always nice to see the community working together for the betterment of all.
Lastly, thanks to the AoB and KoB editorial staff members who donated their valuable time to making this all possible.
The judge's scores and comments as well as the announcement of the winners will be posted soon.
Thanks to everyone,
The AoB and KoB Editorial Staff
