I am fortunate to have acquired a chinese elm with potential to become bonsai. while the tree has a long way to go, it has the qualities for success. please enjoy the photos.

File comment: initial work included washing away the old soil, pruning old roots/reducing the rootball, shortening the height by 6 inches, removing rotted deadwood from an old cut scar, repotting the tree in pure akadama

File comment: to achieve a more compact tree this much was taken off the top

File comment: the trunk looks powerful, gnarled and old scaled against the gallon jug

File comment: old roots have completely circled the pot. these need to be cut back to encourage new root development

File comment: a poorly treated cut scar has turned mushy. all the rotted wood has been removed

File comment: the carving has made a case for the back to become the new front

File comment: original front. new back? done for now. the tree has been placed in an opaque plastic bag to increase warmth and humidity. in a matter of days new buds are showing. when the tree recovers, branches will be shortened for compactness. branching and ramification to be developed by clip and grow training.
