First Biennial Photo Contest

First Biennial Photo Contest

The Art of Bonsai Project has teamed up with Bonsai Today Magazine to host the Bonsai Today / Art of Bonsai First Biennial Photo Contest.

Categories include:

  • Grand prize, overall best bonsai.
  • Best bonsai by a non-professional artist.
  • Best bonsai by a professional artist.
  • Best North American bonsai.
  • Best penjing, saikei or forest planting.
  • Best companion planting.

Photo entries from around the world will be accepted. There is no cost to enter. You may enter as many bonsai as you like and as many photos as you like. The deadline for entry is June 30th, 2006. The winners will be announced and the prizes awarded no later than October 31st, 2006. Judges will be announced later.

If your bonsai was originally styled by someone else, it must be in your possession for at least three years (preceding June 2006), and you must provide the name of the person or nursery who did the original styling. If someone has helped you style your bonsai in the last three years, you must provide their name, and when the styling took place.

By entering the contest, you grant the publishers of Bonsai Today and the Art of Bonsai project the rights to print any photograph you submit in the magazine or on the website, or both. High quality, high resolution photos are essential. Good lighting and a clean backdrop will greatly increase your chances of winning. For further tips on photographing your trees and accent plants, see our Guide to Bonsai and Kusamono photography.

Submit your entries by email to Will Heath at will@artofbonsai.org.

Good luck!
